COMING UP! The Inclusive Class Radio Show 02/24/2012


This week on The Inclusive Class Radio Show parents can learn their Rights and Repsonsibilities regarding their child's inclusive education!  On 02/24 @ 9 AM EST, we will be interviewing Mary Eaddy.

Mary Eaddy is Executive Director of PRO-Parents of S. C.; the South Carolina Parent Training and Information Center (PTI), where she has been affiliated since it’s inception in 1990. She has provided extensive training related to special education, parent involvement, disabilities and non-profit management at the state and national level.  She has served and continues to serve on the Board of Directors and advisory committee of numerous national and state disability and non-profit organizations including the National Coalition of Parent Centers.  

In addition, Mary serves on multiple task forces, committees and advisory groups with the S. C. Department of Education, S. C. Department of Mental Health, S. C. Department of Social Services, S. C. Developmental Disabilities Council, and the S. C. Department of Disabilities and Special Needs as well as other state and local agencies.    

Mary’s most relevant knowledge and passion for her work comes from parenting two children with learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder and being grandmother to a young man with developmental delays.

COMING UP! The Inclusive Class Radio Show 02/17/12




  This week we will be interviewing Dan Habib. Dan is the director, producer and cinematographer of the documentary, Including Samuel. The Emmy-nominated film was broadcast nationally on public television and won the Positive Images in Media award from TASH. 


Samuel has been featured on “Good Morning America,” NPR's “All Things Considered,” and in the Washington Post and Education WeekExceptional Parent Magazine said "Including Samuel is a must see film."


Dan is Filmmaker in Residence at the Institute on Disability at the University of New Hampshire. Until joining UNH in April of 2008, he was the photography editor of the Concord Monitor. In 2006 and 2008 he was also named the national Photography Editor of the Year. His work has appeared in numerous publications, including Time, Newsweek, People, Life, and the New York Times.

Habib has been named New Hampshire Photographer of the Year six times. He has been a judge of Pulitzer Prizes, Pictures of the Year, Best of Photojournalism and the White House News Photographer's Association.

Habib’s second film, Education Revolution (working title), due for national release in 2012, documents the lives of students with emotional/behavioral disabilities, and shows innovative educational approaches that help these students to succeed – while improving the overall school culture and climate.

Habib and his wife, Betsy, live in Concord, New Hampshire, with their sons Isaiah, 15, and Samuel, 11.

COMING UP! The Inclusive Class Radio Show 02/10/12




How can families and schools work together to create inclusive schools? Tune in on Friday, Feb 10 at 9 AM to The Inclusive Class Radio Show to listen to Toby J. Karten talk about collaborating for inclusion!

Toby J. Karten, a consummate educator who has instructed learners in the field of special education since 1976, is a strong advocate for highlighting students’ strengths with research-based inclusion strategies.  Her diversified experience includes being a staff developer, mentor, resource and inclusion teacher, an adjunct professor, author, math coach, and international inclusion coach and consultant for populations of learners ranging from kindergarten to adult levels. 

Ms. Karten’s continuing passion is for educators to prepare students to enter inclusive societies as productive adults. The collaborative and informal presentation style she exudes in her interactive and insightful workshops, coaching sessions, and keynote presentations have reached audiences of administrators, teacher educators, pre service teachers, general and special education teachers, paraprofessionals, and families who walk away renewed with spirited inclusion strategies that help them become self-regulated life long learners. We are looking forward to interviewing guest, Kathleen H. McClaskey, President of Ed Tech Associates, on The Inclusive Class Radio Show this week. Kathleen is a recognized UDL and Digital Learning Consultant with 28 years experience in using technology in the classroom. She is a frequent international, national and regional workshop presenter on topics that include Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Technology for Diverse Learners, Math and Technology: Bringing Research to Practice, Built in Moodle: The Universally Designed Digital Learning Environment and most recently, Personalized Learning Toolkit with Barbara Bray. In the last decade, she directed and designed the professional development in technology-based projects in math, science, literacy and autism.

COMING UP! The Inclusive Class Radio Show 1/20/12

We are excited to interview Mary Falvey, a pioneer in inclusive education, on The Inclusive Class Radio Show on Friday, January 27 @ 9 AM EST! Mary Falvey has worked in education for over 40 years with preschool students through university graduate students.  Her public school  experience included serving as a preschool teacher for 2 years, a classroom teacher serving students with disabilities for over three years, and a principal of several schools serving students with disabilities for over 2 years.  


Mary's higher education experience includes 32 years at CSULA as a faculty member in the Division of Special Education and Counseling, 2 years as the Charter College of Education Director of Student Services and for the past 6 years as Dean of the Charter College of Education.  


Mary has worked the past 40 years to remove barriers for students with disabilities where they have been segregated and isolated from their nondisabled peers and community.  In this role she has worked as an advocate for individual students and their families, served as a expert witness in litigation, and have provided technical assistance and system change strategies for schools and school systems to open up their public school doors to students with disabilities, while working to close the achievement gap for those students as well as others. 


This work has also guided her work at CSULA in the teacher preparation and advanced degree programs. Just prior to joining the faculty at CSULA in 1980, Mary received my doctoral degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in Special Education Teacher Preparation.  



She received a M.A. degree in special education from San Francisco State University in 1975 and B.A. degree from Sacramento State University in Social Science Psychology in 1972.  Mary has published 4 books,  the most recent book is entitled Believe in my child with special needs:  Helping children achieve their potential in school. Mary has also published over 25 book chapters and journal articles and provided over 200 presentations throughout the world for parents and educators.

We will be interviewing Susan Fitzell, M. Ed on The Inclusive Class Radio Show this Friday! Our topic will be about Paraprofessionals in the inclusive class.

Susan Fitzell, M. Ed, is a dynamic, nationally recognized presenter and educational consultant specializing in special education topics, co-teaching, paraprofessionals, bullying prevention, adolescent anger management, and practical strategies to increase achievement of ALL students in ALL classrooms. Susan’s motto is, “Good for all, critical for students who learn differently.”
With many years of experience co-teaching in the general education classroom, Susan possesses a unique understanding of the challenges facing co-teachers and paraprofessionals, and has spent her teaching life developing tools for both child and teacher success. Howard Glasser joins us this week on The Inclusive Class Radio Show. Howard is the founder of the Children’s Success Foundation and creator of the Nurtured Heart Approach™ and the Inner Wealth Initiative™ which have been used in hundreds of thousands of homes and classrooms around the world.

This week, we are looking forward to having Micael Linsin on air with us! He has taught every grade level from kindergarten through eighth grade during the past two decades and holds teaching credentials in Elementary Education, English, and Physical Education. COMING UP! The Inclusive Class Radio Show 12/23/11



This week we have guest, Sarah Cronk! If her name sounds familiar it's because she has made headlines as being one of the creators of an inclusive high school cheerleading team. Sarah created and coached the nation's first high-school based inclusive cheerleading squad at Pleasant Valley High School in Bettendorf, Iowa, when she was just 15 years old. She then went on to start The Sparkle Effect, a non-profit that helps students across the country start squads just like the Sparkles. Since 2009, The Sparkle Effect has generated 51 cheerleading and dance teams nationwide. Sarah's achievements were most recently recognized by Oprah Winfrey. Heather actively designs and delivers social and communication based programs to children ages 3 through 18 in schools and other community settings throughout North America and abroad. COMING UP! The Inclusive Class Radio Show 12/02/11


This week we will be interviewing Dr. Christopher Kaufman, a licensed psychologist who specializes in working with children with learning disabilities and special needs in the school system. Christopher Kaufman is a certified School Psychological Service Provider (Maine). He has practiced for almost 25 years as both a school and clinical child psychologist across a range of educational and clinical settings (serving from September, 1999 through February, 2011 as Lead Psychologist for the Portland School Department). An entertaining and engaging speaker, Dr. Kaufman provides brain-based learning workshops/trainings for teachers, clinicians, and administrators throughout northern New England and, increasingly, around the country. Dr. Kaufman's clinical specialities include the evaluation and treatment of learning disabilities (reading, math, and written language disorders), ADHD and related executive functioning struggles, pediatric anxiety disorders (particularly Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder), and pervasive developmental disorders. This week we are pleased to have our Special Needs Talk Radio's very own, Howard Margolis. Howard currently co-hosts Maximizing Your Child's Potential on Blog Talk Radio.

Our show this week will take a look at identifying and supporting struggling readers in the inclusive classroom. An inclusive class is a beehive of activity and Howard will provide tips and strategies for teachers and parents to develop and strengthen student’s reading skills.

Kathryn will discuss ways in which inclusive schools can support children with special needs. We are excited to have Dr. Paula Kluth join our show on 10/28/2011! Dr. Kluth will talk about including children with special needs in the classroom and ways in which teachers can differentiate curriculum to meet the needs of ALL students.

Dr. Paula Kluth is a consultant, author and advocate, who works with teachers and families to provide inclusive opportunities for students with disabilities Paula is a former special educator who has served as a classroom teacher and inclusion facilitator. Her professional interests include differentiating instruction and inclusive schooling.

She is the author or co-author of ten books including: “You’re Going to Love This Kid”: Teaching Students with Autism in Inclusive Classrooms; A Land We Can Share: Teaching Literacy to Students with Autism; The Autism Checklist; Joyful Learning: Active and Collaborative Learning in the Inclusive Classroom; and From Tutor Scripts to Talking Sticks: 100 Ways to Differentiate Instruction in K-12 Inclusive Classrooms. Paula is also a director of a documentary film titled “We Thought You’d Never Ask”: Voices of People with Autism.

Dr. Kluth has been awarded numerous honors in her field and community. Most recently she was a recipient of the 20 Under 40 University of Wisconsin Alumni Achievement Award for her work with students with autism. She was also named the National Down Syndrome Congress Educator of the Year in 2007 and the Belle Center of Chicago’s Inclusion Advocate of the Year in 2006.
